"Hello all. I dropped my lower unit and replaced my water pump gaskets, impeller, and upper housing today. I ran into a couple of problems, and need some help.

1. There was not a sleeve for the water tube in the kit or in the lower unit. The water tube basically just sits on top of the upper housing. Is this normal?

2. When replacing the lower unit, I got it cinched up to the motor within about 1/2 of an inch. I had to cinch it up the rest of the way by tightening the bolts. Should it have gone on easier, or does this sound correct?

3. I did not replace the lower housing or O-rings on the water pump. Will I be OK, or should I put in a lower housing?

I blew a power head about a month ago...so I'm a little skiddish, and probably being a little over-cautious with this motor."

"1 the water tube slides into

"1 the water tube slides into the housing, the housing has a seal inside it that should have been installed new by you or installed as a new kit.

2 Some drive shafts had a seal around the splines that gets stuck in the crankshaft during removal. Some crankshafts had the seal built into it, and some have no seal at all. Best to look with a flash light for the seal.
The top of the drive shaft should of had a spring loaded pin built into it. This preloads the crankshaft bearings when the lower unit is installed. It sticks out of the drive shaft about 3/8 of inch. If the seal or the pin is stuck it can put to much load on the bearings, so can to much grease on the splines.

3 If you only did the impeller its not necessary to replace all seals. You will know if you check for water in the lower unit. Change the impeller every 2 years and housing every other time. The more you change the better, just check for water.

Hows the water stream now at the pisser?"
