1987 Mercury 60hp possible carb/fuel pump problem Help!!!

My 1987 Mercury 60hp 3 cylinder took a crap on me yesterday out on the lake and was hoping someone would be able to help me solve this problem.

First what happened: I have a 16' skeeter bass boat and we were cruising across the lake wide open for about 3-5 minutes when the motor ran out of gas. I have two gas tanks so i switched to the other tank and the motor started for about 10 seconds and died. Then i noticed in the water a lot of gas so i thought i may have flooded it and let it sit for about 5 minutes. when i went to start it again same stuff. gas everywhere. so i took all the covers off so i could see the carbs and everytime i would try to start the motor it would start for 3-5 seconds then the top carb would spew out gas and the motor would die. I tinkered around and got it running to get back to the launch. I'm hoping that by running it out of gas some damaged wasn't done.

Problems i thought it could have: Clogged fuel lines, fuel pump, carb float getting stuck.
I have worked on a lot of 10 horse and under motors but this bigger motor is a whole new animal.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

I suspect your fuel hoses are disentigrating thanks to ethanol gas. THe rubber particles then migrate to the carbs and stick the needles open, flooding the motor.

The carbs will need cleaning, and all hoses AFTER the fuel filter need replacement.

Jeff

PS: You can thank the Federal government for the wonders of ethanol!
