I have a 1987 25 hp mercury outboard with remote steering and controls. I broke the old control box a few years ago and got a new one with an electrical adapter. I finaly got it running but now when the throttle is all the way forward the butterfly on the carburetor is closed. it is open in neutral with no throttle. i see no way ro reverse it and it shifts ok but the throttle appears to be reversed. What did i do wrong and how do I fix it?

Is your new control box a "Merc" branded model?

Some motors advance the throttle by "pulling on the cable" other's by "pushing on the cable".

Generic/aftermarket controls often have the ability to switch from one to the other by reversing the cam on the shifter - the part that operates the throttle cable (have done this with US Marine controls which can be adapted for many different mfg's).

If your replacement control was (new), check the instructions. If you bought it used a bit of "reverse engineering" on your part may be in order.

Thanks for the answers guys. It appears Mercury had both push and pull motors so they have control boxes for both. I was sold the wrong box at the dealer. I got a pull and should have gotten a push. I know the mercury part number and just need to order one.
