1987 Mercury 150HP Outboard

Engine has been running good untill last weekend. It was hard to start, but finally started. Once I got out of the slip and on the lake, I noticed that at idle speed the motor was sputtering. I gave it a little more gas and it stalled. I restarted and while in neutral, the engine ran smooth at idle and at an accelerated speed. When I put it in gear, it stalled. Anybody have any ideas?

Start w/the basics: new plugs and fuel filters. Check for GOOD spark that can snap/jump 7/16" gap w/tester. If it still stalls, just before putting it into gear squeeze the bulb pump to firm. If it doesn't stall when you shift then suspect the fuel pump needs rebuilding.
 
We need the serial# and any info as to carb or fuel injection.Do a compression/spark test. Post the results.
