1987 mariner 25hp lower unit and shift cable issues

"Changed the impeller, put low

"Changed the impeller, put lower unit back on and tried to keep shift shaft in neutral,while sliding it back together. Every time I try to do
this, the shifter keeps pushing up into foward gear and will not budge. how do I put the shift shaft back in correctly?

"Bill, try it in reverse (

"Bill, try it in reverse (just grab the shift shaft and pull it into reverse)- that way you have a little more shift shaft (sticking up) when you are putting everything back together so it's a little easier to get hold of the top to reconnect.

"Just mate" the lower unit and get a couple bolts barely started (to hold the lower) then you should be able to get ahold of the shift shaft under the powerhead.

If it does happen to slip to neutral before you get the pin in, then simply shift the (shifter) to neutral and hook her up (if you get what I'm saying?)...."
