"Hi forum, need some help here

"Hi forum, need some help here. I have a pair of CR 1993 200hp mercs. My friend has a pair of 1987 220 Lasers (mercs). He said I can have the injection system off his lasers for my carbs. Does anyone know if they can be interchanged? (reed and injection body) I would love to get these carbs off."

The lazer is not the thing to

The lazer is not the thing to use on that. Was Merc's first attempt at fuel injection and an unsuccessful one. Should go to the nearest recycler.

I was there when he bought them. He had to get a ton of mods done on the motors to get them to run right. I would love to get rid of my carbs. I had a 96 225 promax that was fuel injection and that thing ran like a beast. Fired right up every time. I just cant find a decent mechaninc to tune carbs down here.

Thanks for the info guys

"It looks like my attempt at sending my message last night worked as well as our 220 Laser.
Iwill try again.
In Oct 1986 my cousin and husband bought a 1987 22 ft. Sylvan Offshore with a Merc. 200 hp. Black Max. In July 1987,they went on The Great Escape this from Kenora Ont. into the U.S. and back. This on The Lake of The Woods, a 4 or 5 day trip. The black Max quit. He got towed back and demanded a new mtr. They gave him the 220 Laser.
In 1989 they did the Great Escape. At the end of the season he put the boat in warm storage. He took up golfing.
In 2001 he brought the boat to Sasatoon and we bought it. It ran good in the driveway. We hauled it to our 150 mi. north. Put it into the water, got up to almost plane then would die. We found out that a marina in Kenora had put in gasohol. Put in a new fuel pump apprx 600.00 The lake dropped so had to go to other lakes.
In2004 back in our lake new starter 300.00.
2007 boat quits At end lake came back with the kicker 6 hrs arrived at 1:00 A.M. my wife was VERY UNHAPPY! new stator another 700.00
2008 warning module sounds come back with the kicker. phoned the Merc dealer, disconnected the purple pwr wire, changed the water pump. The boat ran great 45mph. Came back to the city, bought a warning module another 275.00. Went back to the lake installed it. Went fishing only got 4300 rpm 34 mph.Fishing was good! Changed back to old module boat won`t start.Thinking of making it guest sleepng quarters in the back lot. The boat now has a total of 213 hrs. We got when it had 161 hrs.
In 1984 we bought a 1976 17 ft. Glasspar with a 150 merccruiser. Fantastic boat, very little trouble, sold it when we got this one. Too Bad!
I still have my Father`s 1956 Peterborough with an 18 hp. Johnson which runs good.
Were these Lasers like an Albatross? We love the boat but I don`t want to spend 15-20 thousand to replace the motor . Any ideas would be appreciated, how much smaller of an engine can I go to and still be happy? 35-40 mph is okay on plane. Thanks for reading my tail of woe. We just might bail out if we can`t enjoy fishing and taking the grand kids. I think I might have the only Laser in Saskatchewan Lucky Me!"

"Oh Dear ,4300rpm ,could be ei

"Oh Dear ,4300rpm ,could be either you are not running on all cyclinders so you would need to check if you have a bad or no spark on one or two cylinders.Id also check compression. From memory these motors had fine fuel filters which clogged easily .Unfortunately the 87 motor you traded was a good motor rare for these to Quit ???"

There are several hidden fuel

There are several hidden fuel fuel filters in the 220. One of which is inside the loop hose at the bottom of the VST. The rest are in the back of the injectors. These can be safely removed. The final filter is in plain sight. If the stator was replaced that so should have the sw. boxes. The list is long on this engine.
Also check the fuel ECU connector for a broken lock ring that loosens up.

"Yes, the mods i was speaking

"Yes, the mods i was speaking af in the above post were the removal of these screens. I am just concerned about the pumps and brain withe respect to their age. Thanks for all the insight. You guys know your stuff."

"I think you might have the on

"I think you might have the only Laser left on earth. But still should go 5500RPM at full bore. There is a final fuel filter on top of the motor with a bolt through the cover and a screen inside it. It looks like an old fashioned JonnyRude fuel pump filter. You need to firing all cylinders first, of course. "

"Yea, well it's not mine b

"Yea, well it's not mine but I was tempted to get the injector body off it in a horse trade. After all the bad press I am going to stick with my carbs. If I come across a newer efi kit I will jump on that. I see a whole bunch of trouble ($$) in the future with that deal.

Do you guys have any thoughts on keeping a pair a 93 200hp CR mercs running smooth. Anything I can add to the gas to keep the fuel flowing smooth and reduce the shellac from gas?"

"When you say tuning the carbs

"When you say tuning the carbs? They should be tuned on a 93 motor ,they may need a rebuild or clean ,floats can stick ,jets can get dirt stuck in them what symptoms does the motor have ?.Although im not a fan of additves or fix it in a can ,Starbrite "Startron" or Seafoam can help ."

"Thanks! Ihad replaced the fin

"Thanks! Ihad replaced the final filter in June before I tried it in July. Could the other stator have gone bad? Is there any use in contacting Mercury and asking them about this, or asking them if I buy most of the electricl parts that I might need, could I get a good discount. This engine doesn`t have 200 hrs on it.
The boat might be an offshore, but the mtr. is a onshore.
Thanks again Ian"

I got them rebuilt a year ago

I got them rebuilt a year ago but they never really idled that good. I did the screws on the sides of the carbs so they were all the same and it wouldnt die but last weekend they were both quiting while I was trying to put it on the trailer in a 15 mph wind. What a fiasco that was. I was told to add a de-tuner to the gas (whatever that is). Also one mothor will caugh while it's at idle and sometimes die. Anyone know what that is?

Thanks

"cough at idle can be too lean

"cough at idle can be too lean or broken reeds, reeds can also make a hissing sound, where too lean is a sharper distinctive cough .Does choking the motor at idle keep it going ?can you set the idle a bit higher to get it to run or maybe back the screws out 1/8th turn at a time to try to stop the coughing. Its hard to explain form the desk but before 1/2turn you should see a noticable difference ie no coughing ."

The screws on the sides are al

The screws on the sides are all set to highest idle they will give. It is never the purest on the V-6 Merc. If all the carbs are cleaned than set the linkage as stated in the manual. Not much else can cause you problem.
