" Hello all... I have a 1987 40Hp Johnson... That does not have any power. It will start up...and sorta idle... but when I go to give it power... it falls on its face. I have rebuilt the carbs... I have checked the reed valves... I have replaced the coils... It has 110 pounds of compression... When I push the electric choke on the key... it wants to go... but will not. These carbs have been off and soaked over night in solution... and been cleaned... I just cannot seem to make it run... Can someone Help!! I mean... This is just an engine!!! It should not be this hard!!!

Thank you for your time,

Trey Forrest

In addition to the comments above. Have you checked to make sure your timer base is moving? Are the butterflies on the carbs completely closed at idle? Sounds like the carbs may be opening too early in relation to your spark timing.h

Champion Plugs... Not sure of

Champion Plugs... Not sure of the type. What should be in there... Whats the gap?

The fuel pump has been replaced. If the flywheel key has sheared... Is that like in a lawnmower engine where the key sheares to keep from breaking the crank?

I had a discussion with a guy last night...who happens to live right down the street and has a 1973 model 40Hp... Having the same exact problem... We have come that it is timming... It seems unlikely that we would have 4 bad carbs... 4 bad coils... exc...

With that said though... I am going to check all these things today... Its supposed to be 80 here today... and I would really like to be going to the lake... not working on it!!!!!

Is there a way to check the timming?
I have a light... How do you adjust??

Thank you guys... Ill be posting again once I check these things.

The position of the flywheel

The position of the flywheel controls the ignition timing.A sheared flywheel key means that your timing is off.Do yourself a favour and check it.

" How do I check the timing?

" How do I check the timing? I will pop the bolt off in the morning to see of the key is sheared/bent.

Thanks,

Trey. "
