"I recently bought a 87 Johnson 35 hp outboard that was in storage nearly its entire life. It's a longshaft model J35ARLCU. Is this a detuned 50 hp? Friend told me that there might be a throttle block on it regulating it to a 35.
I'm putting it on a 16.5' Zodiac so I think it should move along decently. Zodiac is rated up to a 50 hp longshaft. I'll try it in a couple of weeks. My local dealer doesn't seem to want to research much for me unless it envolves a sale at the end.

Swap the wires going to the co

Swap the wires going to the coils ( orange ) i believe.Swapping is done by changing the wires in the plug / cutting the wires / or the use of small jumper wires. Use your imagination.
