I have an old (1987) Evinrude h.p.outboard I am taking it apart to replace the piston rings and restore compression to the top cyl. i removed the powerhead from the lower but the inner exhaust is still attached. do i need to remove this to split the block? and if so how do i go about doing it? i have already removed the bolts and tried pulling on it. Am i missing something or is it just hard to get off?

Thanks a lot kimcrwbr1 yes i took the head off. the cyl. look good and the head gasket wasn't to bad. i think new rings should do it going to take the exhaust off tonight after work.

A firm tap with a mallet or 2x4 will normally break the gasket loose without too much trouble. Did you pull the head off and check the cylinders for scoreing maybe it is just a head gasket. If you have to hone the cylinder it is best to put oversize pistons in so you get the proper end gap on the rings. Get the pistons and take it to a machine shop and get it bored properly according to engine specs tapered or not. If the head gasket looks like crap but the cyls are still smooth what I do is surface the head and block with a piece of sandpaper glued to a good flat board. Stuff some rags or paper towels in the cyls to keep crap from getting into the rings. Torque the head down slow in a center out pattern in 5 inch lbs at a time to spec and check the compression. Allways use a new head gasket when installing the head. GL let us know either way.

Thanks a lot! a couple good taps with a scrap piece of wood and the inner exhaust assembly came right off. the gasket is shot now though do you or anyone else know the part number or where i can find it i have looked and i have yet to see it. \

Thanks alot!!

Get a good cylinder hone and put a good cross hatch on the cyls to break in the new rings. Use lock tite (I forget the number) when bolting the case together a light coat on both pieces and quickly snug them down same with the new seals. Then take your time putting it all together let it cure good before you exspose it to fuel. Then do a break in like a new motor dont run it WOT until after 8 hrs at variable speeds. If you have never honed a cylinder all you need to do is take the shine off of the walls. Use alot of oil and steady quick strokes in and out try and get a 30 degree crossing pattern to seat the rings good. Check the end play on the crank before you take it apart if is not to spec new bearings would be in order mark the connecting rod caps and rods with a felt marker for reassembly and try and keep the needle bearings in the same direction as you took them apart. If you do it right it will last another 25 years with proper maint.

I went to locktite's website could it be the RTV red? I went through their product finder thing and it gave me this one. it says it is for mechanical gasketing. Should this work??

Do not use any RTV on motor assembly !!!--------------Use Loctite 518 sealer.---You can find all the part #'s by looking for " parts " at the top of this page.
