ran my engine in a barrel to c

ran my engine in a barrel to check everything and pulled the plugs out after running for 15 min. to change. they were very black and oilie. i am using a 50/1 mix.this was told to me by members of this forum to do so but the engine calls for 100/1 IS THIS NORMAL THANKS
