Hopefully some of you guys can help me. About a year ago I was chuggin up the Susquehanna River and noticed that the motor was not pushin as hard as it normally does. I put it in neutral and revved it a little and when the idle came down I put it in gear and it immediately seized. I tried to pull start it and the fly wheel wouldn't even move. Needless to say I oared back and its been sitting ever since. The motor is as old as I am and my father was the only one who owned it. There were never any major repairs except for your basic maintenance. My buddy and I have since decided to repair and refurbish it ourselves. Hes very good with motors just has never worked on marine outboards. Can someone help us figure out where to start to fix how it seized?

Once again its a 1987 Evinrude 8Hp Model#E8RCLUD

You did mix the gas and oil at 50:1 on this motor I hope.----First thing to check is the oil in the lower unit.----------Then check the water pump impeller.--------Pull the sparkplugs to see what they tell you.

Pull the gear case off of it and see if it will turn over. You'll have to do that anyway to check/change the water pump.

The mixture ratio from day one when my dad used it has always been 100:1.........Checked the oil and its brown to blackish. Didnt check the water pump yet. Pulled the spark plugs and the top one was all gunked up and the bottom one was slightly dirty
