1987 evinrude 55 hp stuck in drive

"I am looking at buying a boat

"I am looking at buying a boat with a 55 hp evinrude motor, the motor runs good but will not shift out of drive. Does anyone have a clue what causes that, or what I can do to fix it. Any help would be great"

maybe remove shift cable from

maybe remove shift cable from engine try to shift by hand might be adjustment motor should not start in gear if saftey swicth is adjusted right with motor off turn flywheel by hand clockwise while try to move linkage good luck
