1987 Evinrude 50HP Fuel Filter

Hello, I am trying to get my new to me 1987 Evinrude 50HP running. I see the fuel filter is leaking. It is a PF153. I also see in the service manual that there is a fuel screen in the fuel pump, and no mention of a seperate fuel filter.

Two questions, do I even need this fuel filter, and what is the correct one to replace it with?

Thanks for the help

That filter was in there for the VRO.----Not needed when you use the conventional pump.----How many hoses go to the fuel pump ?-----Install a new water pump impeller.----Test your overheat warning horn.

Really, on anything, if possible you run a water separating filter in the boat (need not be a racor, a simple oil filter style metal canister is fine). Inline filters cannot hold a candle to these. Can be done with remote tanks just as well too.

If there's room under the hood, it's nice to then run a small inline filter between the fuel pump & carb(s) as it prevents a fuel pump failure from clogging the carbs - it happens and is no big deal, but is an annoying amount of work compared to a fuel pump replacement.

Interesting, that is what I was thinking. Also the fuel filter was installed backwards so it was immediately suspect. Below is a closer picture of the fuel pump. I suspect I can remove that thumb screw and make it face the other way so the fuel line does not need to bend around like that, but I wont be able to mess with it until after work.

I was told the impellor was recently changed and it seems to be working well. I will follow the service manual as per your advice and test the horn.

Thanks
