1987 Evinrude 40hp

Motor starts and runs great in low speed, but will not accelerate until I press the choke, then it runs faster for a little while. As long as I alternately press the choke it will run at a faster speed.

Having to use the electric primer clearly indicates a problem in the carburetors.----When you push in the key the electric primer ( valve ) opens and fuel is sprayed into the intake manifold.--This fuel bypasses the carburetors .-----The solution is to pull the carburetors apart for inspection and cleaning.---Usually no parts required.
