Sorry if little long. Motor great running, last time out when going into forward gears grinding.

Now, with shift cable off, manually goes into neutral, forward, neutral, reverse, will NOT go into neutral.

Research many suggesting check shift rod length. Everything disconnected, one lower unit bolt left, will drop later today.

Have never done this, exactly what to look for, adjust?
 
Shift rod height must be set to a specific dimension.-----So check gear oil for mantellic bits.----These gearcases are not robust.-----There must be neutral with shift cable off.----Sounds like there is a serious issue in the gearcase.
 
Trying to measure shift rod, lower unit is off, people have said specs say should be around 20", mine almost 22, but dont know how do shift into neutral with lower unit off
 
Set at exactly 20-29/32"-------You make some effort and pull shift rod up for forward.----Push down for reverse.----Half way is NEUTRAL of course.
