"Hi i wonder if you can help me with this problem i've got! my evinrude 225Hp has got a weak hole shot what happens is that when the engine is idle it revs ok! but when i put it in gear and give it full throttle the engine stalls before the boat plane if i'am lucky and get the boat on plane the engine runs fine but the problem is on the hole shot!, now the boat is a 22 Foot chaudron and with that engine there shouldn't be a problem! The problem is on the port side bank because when the engine is running and you pull the ht lead out on any cylinder on the port side there's no movement in the engine, now i have changed the stator and we have swapt the powerpacks just to see if the problem is on the powerpacks but the problem still exsist! could you tell me what the problem might be ?
Thanks Richard!!!!}}}"

"What are the compression read

"What are the compression readings of all cylinders? On that model, you'll probably need to remove only one spark plug at a time to check compression, otherwise the starter bendix usually kicks out.

Do you have a strong blue spark that will jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders at cranking speed? Note that all of the spark plugs need to be removed during this test, and the gap must be 7/16".

(Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas the!y could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2

.................X..(grd)

..........X3..........X4

Spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040.

Let us know what you find."

"Also, see if your engine has a microswitch on the throttle shaft assy, just below the carbs on the starboard side. My understanding is that this switch cuts out a few cylinders when you go to shift, to make shifting easier. I wonder if that could be boogered up (mechanic's term) causing your problem too."
