1987 Evinrude 200 XP -" Lazy " Engine - Slow Acceleration

I have a 1987 Evinrude 200XP that has run great for the past few years. Overnight the engine seems to have lost most of it's top-end acceleration but starts easy, idles fine and runs steady crusing at 1800 rpms. When I try for the hole-shot it ramps quickly to 4000 rpms but then takes awhile to get to WOT at 5000 rpms. It does not sputter- just slowly accelerates. Before this, the WOT was 5400 - 5600 rpms. I have had a mechanic (A Yami mechanic but spent years on the old OMC engines) check the compression - 100psi even on all cylinders. Have spark on all cylinders and had the carbs rebuilt - still have the same problem. Nice guy but he cannot figure it out. I will start over again with another OMC mechanic, just thought I would see if anyone in forum is familiar with this old engine and knows the obvious.

last i,000 rpms are slow.

Fuel system is slow to fill carb bowl.
Filters. In main tank should be a filter on the end of the pipe.
Inline filter.
Float & needle restricting maximum flows. Throttle cable is stretched & vibrates to a fast speed.

Do not believe there is any way ignition can be blamed for the problem

I will check the inline filter; however, I just changed the fuel seperator filter since this problem started. By the way, plugs were changed about 2 weeks before this happened. Could there be garbage in the fuel line in lieu of air getting in the line since the fuel bulb remains hard and does not lose it's prime?

I had a bulb have a check valve lock up intermittantly. It would cause the engines to die rapidly at WOT.......Can you borrow a GOOD running tank & hose setup from someone with a Evuvrude / Johnson connectors ? Might prove that the engine lines or carb are causing the problem. Do you have that valve on the engine that can MANUALLY prime the engine ? Last place to check for tight connections or a crack in it somewhere. Check ALL hose clamps on ALL the hoses.

Might pay to to consider rebuilding the fuel pump....................ALWAYS >>>>ALWAYS put a WHITE towel all around & underneath the pump. Part WILL fall off when it is removed. Good job to do in the drive way. PARTS of the pump ARE NEVER included if you lose them. Mine had NO>>>>NO springs included. Diaphram was badly stretched. There is a FINE screen in side my pumps.

FOLLOW....READ FIRST. THEN FOLLOW instruction with the pump kit.
