"the neighbor heard our 1987 E

"the neighbor heard our 1987 Evinrude 140 after the winter and suggested we change the power pack. it sounded like a good idea - it ran rough at times last summer. Problem is - he wasn't pointing at the power pack, which is on top next to the flywheel. he was pointing at the rectangular connector box below the starter - there are 10-12 connections inside - what is this called and is it worth changing? Is it likely that we will notice the engine runs better and has more power?"

"That plastic box with the two

"That plastic box with the two square components and a bunch of wiring terminals etc inside is the PTT relay box. Being a parts replacer is not a good route to travel. Trouble shoot the engine to find the problem and then correct only the problem.

What is the compression psi of all cylinders? With the s/plugs removed, there should be spark that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

What is the model number of that engine, and exactly what is the engine doing.... or not doing that it should be?

I'd suggest that you avoid your neighbor's suggestions."
