"Need a little help on which direction to go. I have a 140 VRO Evinrude. It starts and runs good, but when you open it up from a dead stop it is very slow to take off. Where should I start??"

I have done a compression chec

I have done a compression check and all four are around 110 psi. How do you check the spark? This motor after it is runs wot for a little while it seems to be better on take off. Prop is 13 x 19 standard for this motor is believe. Does the flywheel need to be removed to check the timer base and what does it look like?? I do thank you guys for your help

You could start by having the motor checked on a dynomometer. If it is running properly then there may be something wrong with the boat. Boats can look " good " but have major faults like water logged foam . rotten stringers etc.If there is by chance a plugged carburetor you risk serious engine damage if you continue to run the motor.

"Richard, I would echo the above and that's why I also asked about the prop. It may be fine for the motor, but not the boat you have it hooked on. Ditto why I asked if this is a new problem.

If it has got out of the "hole" fine with this set-up in the past, that is one thing, if it has never been too good at getting up on plane, it could well be a "set-up" issue..."

"Graham and Others,
I have just purchased this boat a month ago and had it out twice. The first time it ran great, just a little hesitation out of the hole. Thought it might be old fuel, ran over half of the fuel out approx. 15 gallons. Next trip put in new fuel 10 gallons. Motor started and idled fine but at takeoff the hesitation was much worse the first few times. I did get better, but never as good as the very first time. Also at wide open the motor rpms would change up and down slightly."

"Richard, if it was sitting for a bit with gas in it before you picked it up, your carb(s) may have gummed a bit, or the "old" gas got into the carbs the first time you ran it.

Since your compression/spark is good, and if it moved good the first time, the prop is probably not your problem, you may have a slightly clogged jet that is just holding it back a bit..."
