1987 Cobra 3.0L engine

I have a 1987 OMC Model 985042 3.0L outdrive on my boat, and a 4 cylinder engine with the model number 302AMFTC on the valve cover. I believe it is a 1987 Cobra 3.0L engine. I have a cracked block.

Is the Cobra engine block manufactured by Ford Motor Company and is it interchangeable with the 3.0 Ranger or Taurus engine block? Anybody know? Thanks. [email protected]

nope.
The 3.0 181 cubic inch 4 was a Chevrolet/G.M. Industrial/Marine engine, still sold as a Vortec3000 I think through GM industrial and in Marine packages today.
It never appeared in any GM car or truck, although it is based on the 1962-1967 ChevyII 2.5L, and there was a 3.0 version used in some US postal mail vans in the late 60's.

It's basically a forklift and boat engine.

What's with the email? you don't get enough spam? :)

Do you know if the newer Vortec engine block will bolt up to my drive? (A little foolish on my part on the email.) Thank you.

yes, it will bolt up. You will need a different flywheel coupler and possibly starter if you use a post-1990 engine - they changed the crank and flywheel around 1990

So what you are saying, is basically, if I can find a pre-1980 Vortec 3000 engine in good shape, I can transfer the marine parts (intake, water jacket, etc) to it and it will bolt right in where the Cobra 3.0 hooked up without any modification? So if I can find a junk used vehilcle with that engine I am good to go? I don't supposed that the marine parts would hook up to a 2.5? Correct? Thanks

To hystat: I don't understand the meaning of your last post. Can you explain? I can't find anything in the guidelines about merely mentioning a junk vehicle:

"POSTING GUIDELINES

* DO a search of this board before posting any questions. Your question may have been already answered.
* DO include as much detail about your engine as possible including make, model, year, horsepower, model number, etc.
* DO include as much detail as possible about the situation with your engine including symptoms and evaluation done so far.
* DO post your question in the related category. For instance if you have a Evinrude outboard you should post your question in the Johnson/Evinrude category.
* DO check back in a day or so to see if your question has been answered.
* DO remember to thank anyone who took the time to answer your question. A little courtesy goes a long way.

* DO NOT use profanity or demean your fellow users.
* DO NOT post your message or question to more than one category on this board.
* DO NOT post your message in a category where your message does not belong."

No Captain Joe...nothing wrong with your thread, Hy Stat just means go back up re-read his first reply....you will not find this engine in a junked vehicle (except a boat)

Oh! I see what you are saying now. I was hoping there may be an automotive block that would interchange. I had a Mercruiser I/O a few years back and when the engine went out I transferred all the marine parts to a 250 Chevrolet pickup engine and it worked fine. It was a lot cheaper than buying a marine engine. I was just hoping there was an auto/truck engine that would work the same way in this case. I guess that isn't the case. Thanks
