1987 70HP Johnson Trim/Tilt Motor Issue

I have been told by a professional mechanic that I need a new T/T motor: Cost=$1000 plus about 4 hrs. labor at $80/hr. Since my engine is newly overhauled (except for the T/T and lower unit), I'd like to keep it. But I do not want to put another $1200 into it. Rather, I would like to try to replace the T/T motor myself for about the $200 it costs for a used/rebuilt T/T motor. I am pretty good at dealing with car engines: water pumps, v-pan gaskets, and other moderately complicated stuff. Is replacing the T/T motor on this outboard engine way over my pay grade? Will I need a bunch of specialized tools? Can you help my ignorance, here? Thanks.

Lift your outboard up.---------Remove the power trim and tilt assembly.---------Replace the motor.-------------------No special tools required.-----Maybe a hammer and chisel if it is a salt water motor.----Nothing complicated for this job.

Professional Mechanic (?) that wants to charge $1000 for a electric PTT motor, part #394176 that sells for less than $200 new (not rebuilt). Yeah, he's professional alright!

I'm in total agreement with "racerone"..... not that complicated.... do it yourself.

Both of you are awesome! Thanks very much! Apparently this professional mechanic has way too much work, and decided to make this job worth his effort.... I will gladly do it myself and enjoy every minute of it! Again, thanks so much for your input!!
