I have 1987 Crusader 270hp 350

I have 1987 Crusader 270hp 350ci engines. I just installed electronic ignition and want to check the timing. I have to do it on the flywheel but they have rust on them. What I would like to find out since I do not have a manual for these engines is what did they use on the flywheel as a mark.I do see a slight drill hole Just a shallow dimple but not sure if this is for balancing. The bell housing has little plates with a arrow for both the RH and LH rotaion. I just need to know for sure what is on the flwheel for a mark

You'll have to 'degree

You'll have to 'degree' your motor and make a new mark.

This involves pulling # one plug and inserting a stop. (A good hot rod shop or Jegs.com sells these.) The motor is then hand rotated until the piston touches the stop from two directions. The accurate location of TDC will then be halfway between those two marks. Easy enough to do if you can get to the damper pulley bolt.

Thanks. I was hoping not to have to do that much work.
Anyone know of marks or were they just painted on?

"Why do you want/need to do this on the flywheel? Especially with a new system, you should measure total advance, best done at the harmonic balancer."

"They must(?) be in a position for you to change the V belts occasionally. Can you see a line on the SIDE of the balancer, along with the timing mark pointer that's bolted to the timing cover? My own boat is straight inboard, and has little space forward as well. But a timing light on the balancer marks is actually quite easy."

"the timing mark on the flywheel of my 454'sis a very thin scribe mark right under the teeth, the only way i found mine is to turn over the motor wiyh the starter and hold a piece of sandpaper against the flywheel till it is shiny and you'll see it.i put the sandpaper on a piece of sponge,do this cautiously"

Thanks for all the help. I was able to wiggle in and see the front balance mark and set it there. Hope it is suppost to be 10 degree before top dead center. It turns out it was the drill dipple on flywheel for 0 degree.
