1987 2.3L Ford Cobra OMC Distributor problems

first, Let me start by saying, I am new to this and this is my first boat and I am not very knowledgable about the whole deal yet, but, I purchased a boat with a 1987 2.3L Ford Cobra OMC motor, and the distributor is messed up. When you turn the rotor, it just free spins and does not snap back as it is supposed to. Is there a way to fix it without buying a new distributor? or does anyone know where a good place to order something like that without being charged an arm and a leg? Any help or info is greatly appreciated! Thank you
