"Did you check the points as Hy Stat suggested, if they don't open and close with a good connection the coil can never create a spark."

Could somebody tell me what the points are to be set at.My father inlaw put new points in but boat has been sitting.would going to electronic dist. be better?

Jody a matchbook should slip between the points when open...about .06

A better option would to find a drop in electronic module such as Pertronix that fits under the cap and uses optics to replace the points.

The point gap for that engine

The point gap for that engine should be .018 and the dwell should be between 34-38 deg (if you have a dwell meter).

The only problem with going to electronic ignition is that it messes with your ESA module which will cause hard shifting. There is a home made fix available to build yourself buying parts at Radio Shack and the diagram is on the Pertronix website or you need to buy a new ESA module from CDI/Rapair that will work with the Pertronix. If it were me I would get the dist/points working and worry about the electronic later.

Was the condenser replaced with the points? Also need to make sure it was the right points and that somehow they are not being grounded out in the dist.
