1986 VRO pump rebuild question

I have a 1986 110 Hp Johnson with a VRO pump. I plugged off the oil side of the pump about 4 years ago and started using Amzoil 100:1 fully synthetic oil. Now the engine runs fine at higher rpm but after a short time at very low rpm it will run rough and stall. If I pump the fuel bulb when it begins to run rough it will smooth out and idle fine. I’m thinking that I need to replace the diaphragm on the fuel side of the pump. Can anyone tell me if there are any pitfalls to rebuilding just the fuel side of the VRO pump? I have found the OEM parts on this site for under $100. I have limited $ to put into this boat and hope this is an option. I would appreciate any help.

There is a youtube video on doing a mechanical fuel pump. That is what I would do. I did it and it cot 40 dollars to do. look up vro to mechanical fuel pump conversion

Thanks for the reply Matt. Since I made this post I located a retrofit fuel pump that is supposed to bolt right up to the VRO bracket. The part is #WSM 600-156-03 and is available at Mastertechmarine.com for $99.00
