1986 OMS 4.3L with a Big Problem

When putting it in reverse it sound like, when you run over a stick with a lawn mower. When putting in forward gear, it goes in fine.
Please help!!! Really hope it not the outdrive problem. Anybody have problems like this?

Need to get the lower shift cable adjusted first and if you let it do it too much you will have to replace the reverse gear or worse.

Check the gear oil for metal chunks. Clean the bellcrank and make sure there is no corrosion around the end,grease it when you put it back together.Then make sure the shifter is adjusted right. Then when that doesn't work, remove the prop,bearing carrier and check the reverse gear.

I need to know where to adjust it, all new to omc. Do you have diagrams of it

Get the factory manual if possible. If not Clymer makes a fair manual, sold on this site.
