1986 OMC Control Box Question

"I recently purchased a 1987 Whaler, with a 1986 Johnson 50 - so I assume the control box is the same year. I hate to sound like a moron, but can anyone tell me what the two control knobs are below the key on the control box? I am having some engine issues at idle or low speed, and want to make sure those controls are not part of the problem. One control rotates, while the other is more like a toggle or something encased in a rubber casing. Thanks."

"The rotating knob is just a friction for the throttle, does not affect engine itself in any way.
The toggle switch, I believe has been put there by previous owner and not an original part of the box.
If You hear a clicking sound when operating it with key 'ON', he might have moved the choke function out of the key switch to control. You may have to open the control to check wire codes going to this switch."

"Thanks for the advice. No, nothing that looks like a plug for wires. As for the other softer rubber knob, while doing my research I saw similar boxes that appeared to have the same knob, so I'm not sure that it was added. There is one that appears very similar on ebay, item #310082382801."

have you gone to shopevinrude.com and looked at the exploded diagrams to see if its in there?

i looked on ebay at the remote control. are you sure its a toggle switch or is it a cap for the tach plug?

or are you talking about the emergency kill switch on the side?

I can not remeber the year of

I can not remeber the year of my motor (I think 1977) 85hp and I have the rubber toggle switch on my controll. With key on push toggle switch up and you should hear the choke silonoid click.

Rubber toggle switch = choke
