1986 Mercury 60hp ... I could use some help.

Hello, my motor will start and run good but after a while will start surging when trying to accelerate. I have found when it does it that I can move the throttle back and forth and it will most of the time go back to accelerating fine again but sometimes it shuts clear off. I've replaced the plugs and diaphragm in the fuel pump and the motor is peeing steady. My fuel lines are all of the automotive type from the tank on throughout the motor. Another symptom is when I go to the dock to load onto the trailer I can never get it to accelerate it will shut right off.

I have an 80's vintage 60hp merc and had similar issues.

Is the pump ball on the fuel ling going soft or staying primed? Had an issue where the ball needed better clamps on both in and out connections to the fuel line from the tank.

If that's all good, it may be a coil issue. Replaced a coil pack when I was losing power accelerating. Could troll and run low speed but not throttle up. The coil fixed that problem

The pump ball is somewhat going soft. I stopped this last time out and pumped it up but it didn't seem to make a difference. I was by myself and it would have been nice to had someone helping pump it while running. This 2003 Lund is new to me so I have been methodically changing maintenance items to know where I'm at on this type of stuff. I'm thinking I should do the same on this primer ball also for it sounds like it something that happens a good bit.
I read up on my problem then will try a couple of things to see then think about it and repeat the same. I will have to look up on diagnosing the coil packs and do that also for our problems seem identical.
The motor starts up cold and will run good for a while then will act up. I found this last time out to test it that feathering the throttle up and back I could sometimes get the motor to go on and accelerate but sometimes it would stall and shut off. When I get to the ramp to load it back up it never will accelerate.
I have a lot of different experience on things but not on boat motors. I sure do appreciate your reply ... Thank You!
