"My motor seems to idle fine, but when I give it gas it jerks every couple of seconds. Initially I thought I was hitting bottom or something but was not even close. The more gas given the quicker the jerks come. Problem is nonstop now. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks"
 
Sounds like a worn out clutch-

Sounds like a worn out clutch-dog in the gear case. If You hold the shift lever into forward - same problem?

"i think,what morten is referring to,is forcefully,holding it,in forward...drop the lower unit,to confirm,shift coupler screws and location are ok...other than that,very common prob...requires inst new clutch dog,forward gear,seals and oil,and new wtr pump kit."
 
Held shift lever forward today

Held shift lever forward today and problem was not as bad but still there. Could give more gas without skipping but it still won't go fast enough to plane out before it kicks. Appreciate the help.

This unfortunately indicates that Your lower unit needs a major repair as both forward gear and clutch dog has to be changed.
