Hi guys,

The lower unit on our 1986 Johnson 110 hp j110tlcdc pretty much ate itself last summer. We replaced the lower unit with a new on that uses the two piece drive shift. I talked with one of our marine techs and he gave me a shift rod height of 21 27/32 in neutral but it won't adjust down that far. Am I doing something wrong? Also, which direction should the top face, to the rear? Thanks in advance.

Joe

Correct dimension.----Are you adjusting for this dimension with it in neutral ?----Post a picture of the top of your shift rod.

He just called me back. He said he gave me wrong year. It's 22 1/16 with the bend facing forward. Texted me a pic of the page in the repair manual. Thanks.

I just looked up the part number for this shift rod. It's 332120. Another site lists this rod at 30 3/4 inches. The rod I have is the same length.

I tracked down a similar issue. If the measurement is 21 27/32" and your current shift rod will not thread down to that height you have only 2 options. 1) have a machine shop cut, turn, and thread the rod you have to the correct length.
2) Spend the money and buy the correct length shift rod.

In my case, I found a previous owner installed a lower unit from a newer 150 that used a longer shift rod. The simplest solution was just to get the correct rod for my motor and it made everything a snap.

That's the rod I have. I ordered the repair manual. I have my own home machine shop so modification is not a problem. I chased the threads already and extended them a bit. I didn't want to go crazy yet. The part number is 332120 which is the same one you posted. That rod measures the same as mine at 30 3/4 inches. It's the correct lower unit for this motor as well. Kinda baffled.
