1986 Hardin marine

I have an 86 Hardin marine. The tilt switch is not raising or lowering. I can hear a click. I tried it out when I was messing with it and it moved up and down. Turned the boat off and then back on to retest it, wasn’t working. I replaced the tilt motor and still nothing. Going to replace the solenoids just to start the process of elimination. Anyone else have any suggestions on what else to check? This is a new boat for me.

Most often it's the solenoids or the switch on the controls that goes bad. Try applying 12v directly to the solenoids and see if it moves. If it does, then the switch is likely bad. If direct voltage doesn't activate the solenoids then replace those.

The solenoids didn’t move it. I hear it engage but it doesn’t move. This is new one to me. Does one wire move it yo and one wire move it down? Or does one solenoid move it up and once solenoid move them down(speaking about trim and tilt)

My trim button up is not working now also.

Please post the model # of your engine to help with further info. A 1986 Hardin Marine boat could have a variety of engine sizes and model years.

You mean the trim/tilt cylinders don't move? You should have 2 solenoids that activate the trim/tilt electric motor. One will have a blue wire leading to it which engages the motor for upward movement and the other has a green wire which is for downward movement. When you apply 12V directly to the terminal of the solenoid you should hear a loud click as it engages. If you do not hear that click then the solenoid is likely bad.

there are 2 model numbers. I tried to upload a photo but it wouldn’t let me. I thought it was the tilt motor going out so I replaced that and I realized I could test the old one and it works fine. For a second after replacing the motor it moved up and down when I was testing a solenoid. But then it stopped working.
The solenoids click. I feel it

Okay, you're in the wrong forum for this problem. This is a Johnson/Evinrude outboard forum and you have an inboard or I/O setup. Here is a list of Marineengine.com forums. They are divided by drive type (Mercruiser, Volvo/Penta, OMC, etc) and you'll get the best help posting in the appropriate forum that matches your equipment.
