I am not a big fan of this model lower unit because the shift disconnect is behind the starter and is quite difficult to get to. You will see the shift linkage coming up right in front of the power head. You have to take out the bolt that holds the shift linkage together. Once out, the entire shift rod pulls down and out of the midsection. Sometimes it will get a little hung up on the little boot near the bottom of the midsection. Just carefully remove it and remember how it goes back together. This is a great motor otherwise. I had one on my last boat and it ran great!

I agree, these can be a pain in the arse to get that bolt out. Also you can take the VRO pump loose so you have more room to get your fingers in there to put the bolt back in after you get the lower unit remounted. If you've got meat hooks like me, every little bit of room will help. I've even taken the carbs off if I've had big problems getting to that bolt. Why OMC never went with a split shift shaft or a design like Merc or the Honda stuff is beyond me.

hi again thanks for your info, ive taken out the starter motor and i can see that bolt it is a bit hard to get at. it seems to be on a clamp thet pushes the shift leaver up and down does the bolt have to come right out or just loosened and slide the clamp out,or how does it come out thanks again

There is a special bolt / pin that goes through the shift rod and it must be taken out.----------Look at this carefully as you can easily try to take out the bolt from a clamp and that is wrong.-------No clamp needs to slide out !

hi again regarding the removal of the shift lever there was only the clamp bolt i removed this bolt and the bracket slid out freeing the shift leaver it had pin whch went into the hole in the shift lever so everything is sorted out i apprecate all your help thank you all
