1986 Evinrude 85 hp, cranking issues

I just bought what might have been a lemon...

Yesterday it started fine and ran rough on the test ride so I lowballed and he went with it seemingly reluctantly.

Today however I got it started 3xs for no more than 2-3 seconds and then it dies but my main issue is it barely cranks over. Brand New battery, brand new cables so I'm assuming it's a old issue but the seller said it ran fine before... I've cleaned all the connections and even tried using my truck battery to start it. I can hear the starter whining when I turn it over but it only spins once every 3-4 seconds sometimes longer. The starter also was burning hot after about 10 attempts.

Any troubleshooting tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Your wording on the issue leads me to believe that the starter armature is slipping within the bendix drive.... and grabbing the bendix just every so often to crank the engine over. It also leads me to think that your hood is still on the powerhead whereas you can't see what's really going on.

You need to be specific in explaining what the problem is.

Also, as above... the model number of that engine is needed.

Sorry guys. It is a force 85 engine I'm not sure why I thought it was Evinrude.

856x5L is the model number.

Specifically, with the hood off, I can see the flywheel turn but only about a qtr turn every few seconds. And a few times it actually starts but 9/10 times it doesn't barely turn over. Supposedly it has a new battery and new cables that are around 10ft long.

I took the starter apart today and cleaned it with a wire brush, the boat started right up but then died immediately and then the starter barely makes the flywheel spin again. With the sparkplugs out it turns everything just fine...
