1986 Evinrude 140 "rapping" noise

Well I think it's done....After fine tuning my carbs I took her out for a ride. I went around the lake (4 minute ride) and shut her off to fish for 5 minutes. She was running beautiful. I cranked her over, started right up, went to take off and all I hear is a solid rapping noise coming from under the hood. I shut her down and after a few F bombs and tears I decided to idle in fearing the worse. I don't understand, I have great compression, 125,125,125 and 120. She was rebuilt 2 years ago. I'm shocked this happened. I'm asuming the worse that something happened to a rod. My question is do you think my gutt feeling is right or could it be something minor? If it is a rod then is the motor worth fixing and or how much is the motor worth to sell for parts if it's not worth fixing. Motor is in great shape, well was.

This just pretty much ended my boating season for a long time :mad: I do not have the funds for another motor.
 
Time to check stuff.----------Loose flywheel nut ???-------------------Check gear oil in the lower unit for metal bits.
 
just wondering....that rapping noise is coming from the head and not the lower unit. Why would I check for shavings? I'm trying to educate myself here.
 
Constant rapping noise is of course occuring at any moving parts. You should take the cowling off and pin point to where the noise specifically comes from. Is it within the block? If so, bearings, rod, shaft, etc...anything that moves within.
If you can take the powerhead aparts and replace parts within yourself then it's worth fixing. Having a shop do it, the answer is "NO".
Selling it for parts on Ebay, you can earn over a grand, but millions of hassles to handle.
Selling it for parts, if you're in my current state, I will pay you $300 in cash. Price is depending on what part of the U.S you are in.

I wasn't trying to be "smart", Racerone has been very helpful. This is why I hate writing problems...people take things out of text. I am not the smartest mechanic but know enough to be dangerouse. I'm trying to learn as I go. I was simply wondering why I would look for shavings if I know the engine noise is coming from in under the hood..... It's called learning.

When i get home i plan on checking my lower end and looking for anything lose. I think it's a rod but I hope I'm wrong.

QNH - live 30 min. from Boston, MA. I will probably part out the motor to maximize it's value. I need $$$$ for my next used purchase. I also feel that I can learn as I go in disassembling the motor. Hell, I can't hurt it...
 
There is metal bits in the gear oil! I'm asuming this is not good....

wasn't metal but almost like small pieces of felt... I ran the motor on the hose and took a srew driver and listened to the head. Noise is def coming from the port side of the engine.

For sale...$600.00

Not going to deal with it anymore.
 
ok, I'm still wrapped up in this unit. Racerone you mentioned to check the lower unit for shavings...what I found is not shavings but some kind of felt material, not metal. Is it possible the noise in coming up from the lower unit to the head? I'm going to go home and run the outboard on the hose, put it in gear and see if that noise gets louder. When I ran it the other day I never put it in gear, just checked it at idle.....
 
The magnet attracts fine metal " shavings " and that is very normal.----------------Worked on one " crossflow " V-4 recently( yours is a looper ) where a bad check valve on the VRO pump was making it sound like the motor was ready to come apart.----------Replaced the pump and all is well with the motor.---------A simple test would be to fill the carburetors with fuel , disconnect the pump and start it up.
