When a starter solenoid is going bad can it work intermittently or will it just quit? Could the key switch go bad internally? I can jump across the solenoid and the motor spins. I can bench test the solenoid and it works. Just trying to narrow down the problem before changing parts. Thanks for any help.

Does the starter just spin or does it engage the flywheel and crank properly ?
It engages the flywheel and the motor cranks. Because this boat has sat awhile the key sticks in the start position so I have to turn it back once the motor starts. Doesn't release on its own.

Look on ebay. Starter solenoids are anywhere from $11 to $30 dollars. If it is the original solenoid, it is a cheap replacement part.

Forgive me I failed to mention in my original post that sometimes when I turn the key I get nothing but silence. That's why I'm asking about the key. Sorry. First time boat engine mechanic. Had several boats over the years but never had to troubleshoot them. Thanks for any help.

My comment was to tell you that it is an easy and inexpensive part to replace and eliminate from your source of problem list.

If your problem persists it leaves the key as the problem (which is much more difficult replace).

I know that throwing parts at a problem is not the best solution, but depending on your skill level, it is sometime the easiest and cheapest solution.

I agree. Thank you for the help. I pulled the key switch out and it has six spade terminals with wires soldered to each one and they're covered in a black protective coating. Not ready to go down that road. Thanks again.
