About six weeks ago I had the outdrive off to repair the gimbal bearing. When I bolted up the O/D I noticed that one of the tilt pistons extended a few inches all by itself and would not easily fit onto the stud. I didn't have a battery in the boat, so in order to collapse the piston just enough to allow me to bolt it in place, I used a pipe clamp to collapse it. Yesterday I put a battery in the boat and started it up. I tested the tilt and found it was not fully operational due to low fluid. After adding fluid and retesting, the unit operated ok, but when I looked down at the hydraulic unit and had someone operate the tilt, I could see fluid spitting out of a small hole at the bottom of the reservoir. Does anyone know if there Is a relief valve built into the pump? I am wondering now if the procedure with the clamp damaged the pump and it is now pressurizing the reservoir and blowing a hole in the casing. I can still buy a reservoir housing for $80, but it makes no sense, if I am risking blowing a hole in it due to a pump problem,( if that was the cause of the hole). It doesn't look like the reservoir rusted out either. I believe the tilt unit is the OILDYNE brand with the bracket. Also, what would cause a tilt piston to extend partially on its own when it is removed from the drive?

It just happens, you install a battery and trim in or trim out to get them even.
The plastic res had a crack in the bottom, and the new one is not $80. I`m almost sure the plastic one will replace the metal cannister one too.
