"someone is selling a used 1986 90 hp merc for 500 obo, i spoke to him and he said that it ran fine once the throttle was opened a little, but had a hard time staying running during idling, he rebuilt carbs but thinks it may be a stator. I have a 1980 70 merc, that is torn apart. 2 questions, 1 - is the parts interchangeable between these motors and 2 - is this a deal to try and get him down to 400? any help would be appreciated."

The stator doesn't have anything to do with it not idling. Most likely just needs a link & sync according to your manual.

"And to your other question - no, parts are not interchangable.

1986 model year was the year Merc redesigned their entire line - everything changed - iginition systems, displacement of the powerheads, gears - you name it.

There was another minor change in 94/95, but not as drastic. 1986 is really the dividing line between the "old style" and "new style" Merc's.

Parts from a 2009 90 horse 2 stroke (yes, still in production for sale mostly outside of the U.S. Market) will fit that 86 you are looking at, but as an example a 1983 90 horse is a totally different beast..."

"Thanks Graham and IBNFISHN, i was the one who posted about a 70 model with a bad middle piston and didn't knwo if i should rebuild or not, you guys have helped sway my decision on that on, i will part that motor out. as for the 90, i am going to look at it and see about haggling with him."

"Steve, if it's running and looks like it hasn't been neglected, and the compression is decent (would look for at least 90-100 psi min) then 4-500 bucks would be a "good buy" in my opinion.

The post-86, 90 horse Merc is probably the most prolific (mid range) powered motor ever on the market...

Side note - when I was younger a "mid-range" motor was a 40 or 50 horse. Now with guys hangin' 850 pound, 5.8 litre V8 350 horse outboards on the back of their rigs, a 125 (which used to be a monster motor) is considered mid-range...
