I am replacing the gear set- forward, reverse and pinion and cluthch dog on the lower drive using sealoc manual as my guide. The pinion nut must have come loose as it was chewed up and missing a few teeth on pinion gear and reverse. Question is, the manual says after installing the pinion on the driveshaft to put the shaft on a "gauge bar" measuring tool to see what shims needed before insalling driveshaft back into housing. I do not have that gauge bar device, so is there a way to figure how many shims to use? There are 5 on the shaft now, 2 @.03 and 3 @ .04. I ordered a couple of each new with all the parts. Is there another way to measure the distance without the gauge bar?
