can someone explain how to pro

can someone explain how to properly adjust the rockers and valves on a 4 cylinder 3.o omc

i put the no cylinder at TDC and then tighten the rockers down till there was no lash like the seloc manual suggested. then did that with each cylinder after but still a little unsure of myself..

also im getting spark to the plugs and have the distributor setup 1-3-4-2 but still when i crank the motor over all i get is a popping or i guess blow back from the carburetor( this is with the filter off). im assuming maybe the timing is just off but even if it was should i still get the motor to start up just run very poorly..Also note that the previous owner put on an IGNITOR system to replace the points system that was orignally on it .

anyone have imput on other things to try or maybe im not doing something right..

Also note the reason for valve adjustment is just had the head cleaned and checked for cracks etc. and installed all new gaskets and had the mechanic replace an exhaust valve.

"wanna be 100% on valve lash?

"wanna be 100% on valve lash? put a compression tester on each cylinder. While cranking the engine on the starter, watch compression. Tighten rocker nut until comp starts to drop off... that means the rocker is too tight, and valve is not closing tightly... then loosen the nut till it clicks...that's too loose...now split the difference...tada....then move to the next cylinder until all 4 are set.
That setting lash by feel and 1/2turn, 3/4 turn, 1 turn feel the pushrod crap is great for your old Camaro...but if 1 valve hangs open the slightest bit on a boat engine, it causes big troubles so I always use compression method on boats... I think there's quite a few boats out there low on power or idling like crap because the valves aren't following the cam absolutely perfect. "
