I have a 1986 2.5L OMC/GM motor. I just replaced the block and now I can not get a spark from the coil. I replaced with a new coil and still not spark. I believe the problem is in the wiring somewhere. Anyone who can help i would greatly appreciate. Thanks.

"Does the boat have a safety (kill) lanyard? Since you replaced the block, double check the big black cannon connector at the engine for the main harness, unplug and replug very tightly. Take a meter and measure across ground (engine) and the positive post of the coil, Is there any voltage there while starting and is there any there just when the key is turned to "ON""

I checked for voltage at the coil and there is voltage when engine start atempt and with key just on. there is also power going through the power wire from the coil to the distribtor but no spark there.

"Next thing to check is the points, they need to close and open to pulse the coil while the engine is turning over. Did you transfer the dist over from the old block? If so is it possible you could have it 180 deg out?"

"I will check that not sure if

"I will check that not sure if that is off by 180 or not. I did transfer the dist so maybe, the dist only has one point that i see and it want pulsing, so maybe that is it. what would be the next thing just in case."

"Chris...not sure I understand your last post but with the key on and the dist cap off turn the engine until the points are closed. Then with your finger or something small pry the points open and you should see a small spark jump across, this would mean you just fired the coil. If that works then you need to see if the pints are opening and closing as the dist turns."

"Disregard the prior post, I went out and replaced the breaker point you told me about along with the distributor cap and condenser. It worked perfectly. The information you provided fixed the problem, thank you so much for your help, once I replaced those items it started right up. Good thing too, i was about to sell the thing. Again thanks for your help Bob."
