Hi,

I am very new to boating and recently purchased an old motor/boat recently i took the motor out, it started well and ran fine after about 30minutes the motor lost power and smoke started to pour out of the cylinder head then the motor quickly died and could not be restarted

how should i go about this?

what should i look for?

Shane

OK, so you are new. You just learned a lesson the hard way.

Terrible news, there. You cooked it. Obviously the water pump wasn't working and it overheated. You may not have anything left to fix. But at the very least, you must replace the head gasket and exhaust cover gaskets. And of course the water pump. While you have the exhaust covers off, you will be able to see if you totaled the piston skirts & rings.

Thanks i will check to see if i have burnt out the rings...

they look good, the pistons hold compression. The head gasket is reasonable however the exhaust cover gasket is rooted. im uploading some pictures.

What are the compression numbers and does it jump a gap on both plug wires of at least 3/8 inch brite blue snap? Get a photobucket account and upload the pics there and link them here.

hi im unsure as to what the compression numbers are and how to get them? (user manual i take it?) i dont understand what you mean here? how do i check if it does jump a gap on both plug wires of at least 3/8 inch brite blue snap?"

Pictures are coming im looking after my young family today so im a little rushed for time in between their naps :)

and this needs rewiring now...

Ok so ive googled the compression test and i need to buy some equipment for that, some rabbit ears and a boat motor trolley...

this is going to get expensive real quick hahaha :(
