Need some help with the tilt. It's a V-6 3.8. Tilt will not go up unless helped by lifting drive by hand. I have serviced the clutch box per Chiefalen's direction with no help. The solenoids seems to not click very loud now when you push the up button. A couple years ago I replaced some of the solenoids, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas what I can do ? Thanks !!

have you greased the trunnion bearings lately? clean up all the wiring terminals with sandpaper including grounds and connections right back to the battery. or, if you know how to do voltage drop tests, you and a friend can possibly pinpoint one problem connection.
I like to use 2 shim gaskets on the clutch cover.
might be time for a new motor.

Tried to loosen the clutch cover, even bought some mylar shims and put between the cover and housing. Seems to help a bit, but still the drive will go up some then just clicking from the solenoids. I moved a couple of the solenoids around too just for the hell of it. I have gone over all connections too, and it just doesn't seem to change. Any more ideas guys? Thanks so much ! Gary

You went thru every step outlined in the post of the illustrious, Chiefs post ?

You have a fully charged battery of course.

If yes... disconnect the battery run to the center pos. post of the tilt solenoids, a battery cable straight from the pos side of your battery.

See the brass strip that bridges the 2 pos sides of the solenoids.

Remember to disconnect the battery both sides. You run from the solenoids to the pos side of the battery and then last connection will be the neg side of the battery.

I you for any reason do not understand this reply post your question here and i will try to explain better.

I still think you missed something, you didn't clean out the clutch housing, the clutch plates are rusted, something. The base of the tilt solenoids are the ground they sit on a metal bracket, and the ground goes thru to the mani or block, bad ground ? Also there is a ground on the bell housing actually the back with a thru bolt the wire is in the back.

That was removed and cleaned ?

It is in the 1 or 2 o'clock position port side. " right side looking at the stern with your back towards the bow "

Thanks Master. I don't see the Chiefs illustration post?
The clutch housing was cleaned out and I put in the purple grease that Chiefalen said to do last year, so I think it's in good shape.
I will check the grounds you mention above.
I will try the direct hookup to the battery you mention here as well.
Battery is fully charged. Thanks again !

Ok,, so I have gone through all grounds, including solenoids. Went though all items in above post (not-working). Still exactly the same. When you first turn on key and push up, drive goes up about 4 to 6 inches then stops, and nothing but clicking from solenoids. I tried the direct jump from battery to solenoids and no difference. I am baffled by this whole deal !! Anymore help ?? Thanks Gary

With the drive fully down remove everything in the tilt clutch housing.

Have to remove the triangle piece on the screw gear housing .

Inspect the bronze gear and screw gear, after soaking them good also the clutch plates.

Take the pack apart.

Post back!

Ok, so last night I took off the gear that raises the leg, ( 3 9/16" bolts to remove). I wanted to see what the tilt motor would do with no load on it at all.
Acted the same as with the leg attached. I will take apart the clutch housing tonight and will let you know what I see.

like the Master said take the end plate off at the end of the shaft claen and grease it. after hours of working on myine that all it was.

Hey wizard.
So I took the three bolts off the triangular end plate, the plate came off, but there is a silver disc in there I can't get out. How do you get that out to get inside?
Thanks !

I'm not a wizard either, but I can rock a pointy hat

to get that round plate out the back, simply hit the brass worm gear at about the 10 o clock position with a hammer and a soft punch - there's only an o-ring holding it.

there's some good videos on Youtube that show how to test a circuit for voltage drops.... 2 people with a meter can isolate the problem spots toot suite.

Thanks for all the help. Got the round silver plate out and the shaft with the worm gear. Cleaned it all up and greased it all up very good and re-installed it all. Tilt is exactly the same. So,,, I think I can say with a pretty clear conscience that it is NOT anything mechanical with the tilt. It must be a power problem. I am going to watch the Youtube videos and go from there. I will keep you all posted!
Thanks again,,, Gary

Ok,, so after much working on the electrical circuit I decided to jump a hot wire from the battery direct into the tilt motor plug, (I still have the raise/lower gear off, so no load on the system). The motor will run for about 5 seconds then shuts off. I can re-connect a couple times and get the motor to run a short bit, but that is it. I replaced the tilt motor in Sept. '09. Could the motor just be toasted? Thanks again Gary

Ok,, so I found the old tilt motor from the '09 switch out. I put on the old tilt motor, and now all my problems are gone. The leg raises and lowers as it should. So I guess the newer tilt motor must have went bad. Man,, what a long journey this fix has been! So we will head to the lake it 2 weeks and give here a test drive. Thanks again for all of the input guys!
