"Okay, This boat has problems , most of which I have solved, except for this one. Very difficult starting until last july 4, when my entire family got stranded overnight. Tried to start and it just "teased" me kicking over. The spark was almost non existent. It is a points system. What do I do to get some mean spark back.?
Thanks An I convert to electronic ignition?"

"That might depend a bit of the electronic system You put in and which components.
That engine does not have a ballast resistor on the coil, but a built in resistance in the + cable going from alternator to coil. If You put in a system with a 12V coil and used the 'old' plus cable, there will be a problem. It might fire when cranking, but die as You release the key. Another possibility is Your cable/output from starter to coil is defective and does not give direct 12V to coil when cranking. 2 small cables goes to/from starter: one yellow/red to activate the solenoid, the other one to coil. The second one by-passes the resistor cable used when engine is running."

"Thank you for such informative help. I will investigate further. What actually determines the strength of the spark. Is there a coil on this engine. Willtuning it up improvr the amoun t of fire?> I already gapped the points, and at night you can hardly see a spark."
