I got a 85 boat with a OMC 2.5 inboard and a OMC stringer 400 stern drive. The boat is leaking water through a finger size hole in the transom seal and there is no water coming into the thermostat housing. I pulled the 22 hole transom seal np, pulled it over the outdrive with np. I got the seal ordered. I need to replace the water pump/impeller. A few monthes back i put a water pump/impeller on a mercruiser 2.5 and a 3.0 both in the foot. Well i got ahead of myself and pulled the lower/foot, all i found was a sets of bearings and gears and a fat flat black wire that run from the upper into a gear housing of some sort. well i called and dealer and was told ther would be plate on the upper that has 4 bolts holding it on ( same plate/cover for upper oil check plug) so i removed the 4 bolts and tapped then proceded to beat then pry the cover off.......it is stuck solid.. after looking at some pics but still cant get it off. Any help on the easy/correct way would be killer. thanks alot.

I need to inspect it or replace it cause there is no water coming out the upper intermidiate housing to cool the engine, might just be full of trash. I have found the manuel here and downloaded it. It looks as though it comes out the bottom of the upper. I removed the top plate but it seams as though i am going to remove the whole lower also. I was told that those 4 bolts and cover removed i would have full acces to remove the impeller and inspect the housing and gear drive. I found the impeller locally for $22. The housing is a bit more. I just want a reliable boat, dont care about speed or pulling. thanks alot

No need to remove the entire drive.

Have a table or a large cooler or chair ready on the starboard side.

On a trailer lower the bow as far as it will go, and raise the drive 1/2 the way up.

Remove the very top bolts, and the exhaust and the lower will come down. place it on the table and tie it to the swim platform. be careful of the cable don't pull on it plenty of play in the cable.

remove the 4 bolts facing u in the upper drive from the bottom and the whole waterpump and shaft will come out. you could raise the drive a little more to make it easy, i sit on a milk crate when i pull the pump.

Replace the housing also.

You have a pm.

Got to the impeller housing... all look good other then the impeller is shot. I should be able to pick it up and be on the water this weekend if all goes well. thanks so much for the help and for anyone that says omc is hard to work is going about it the wrong way.....neat boat to be honest.
