My mercury will not start using the ball on the hose to prime it. I can squeeze the ball until it is rock hard and pull and pull and pull and it will not start cold. Once I put the slightest amount of mixed fuel in the carb it fires up the first pull and runs beautifully. Idles, responds when throttling up. It has new spark plugs. Why doesn't it prime itself?

Simply because the primer bulb has been given the wrong name !!!-------------It is nothing but a manual fuel pump. -----It saves you having the fill the carburetor using the armstrong starter ( recoil ) very tiring.-------------------So look into why your choke mechanism is not working !!!!!!!

There was no mention of the choke in your first post here.--------------So post a picture of the choke butterfly / shutter.------------Is it still closed after the first pull on the starter cord ??

I will take some pictures and try pulling it and seeing if the choke mechanism comes partially opened after the first pull. It is a manual choke, so I don't think it does come open, but I will confirm it. Thanks for the idea.

You have to look at your YOUR motor !!---------------The " no start " condition sure seems related to workings of the choke!!

Wow! You are not very nice. If I was an expert like you I wouldn't need to be on this forum. A little bit of patience for us ignorant people that don't eat drink and sleep outboard motors would be appreciated. I have really appreciated the help I have received from some very nice patient people on this forum, but racerone, please don't help me anymore if you are going to have such an attitude.

Remove the plastic screen in front of the carburetor and use your thumb to block of the air as you pull the starter.------If the motor now starts it proves that you have a choke problem !

It's possible the tiny passages in your carb are plugged from improper long term storage--a common problem. If so, the carb will need a thorough rebuild.

Racerone, you were correct. It was the choke mechanism. After looking very closely at the choke, it was not closing all the way. There is an adjustment on the cable, I moved it so the choke closes completely when it is pull out all the way. Problem solved. Thank you very much for the education, I would have never thought to look there.

Best Regards!

Dumb question....but does this apply to an electric start as well?
