I purchased a old Lund this spring with a 1985 - 60hp 3 cylinder Merc (A110380) on it. It hadn't been used for the last couple years.
he motor has good compression readings 130, 130, 128.
It needed a new stator (high speed coils shot) & rectifier (charge coil wires with insulation rot) when I got it, which I replaced immediately.
I had it out for its third short voyage (day fishing trip) and notices that the tell tail was not pissing with in 30 seconds after starting (had to rev the motor to get it to start). It is time for a new water pump.
I purchased a complete water pump kit, watched some You-Tube videos and dove in. It came apart fine, I installed the new lower pump housing, gaskets, stainless plate. Lightly greased the rotor and cup, Installed the new rotor by turning the drive shaft clockwise.
Got the water pump all back together and am ready to put the lower unit back on. I slide it in and can not get the splined shaft to line up. After fooling around for 1/2 hr. I hunt up a flashlight and look up the drive shaft housing and I find a #32 - Seat Assembly (http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER78654A+1) loose in the housing. It was stuck in the lower part of the housing and keeping the drive shaft from lining up with the motor spline.
I slid it on the spline and the slid everything back together. Put on the muffs, tested the new pump, everything appears to be working fine.
Here are questions:
1. I didn't find the #33 Seal, Splined (http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER86304)
2. I didn't find the #41 Spring Compression - Drive shaft (http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER24-20254)
when I removed the lower unit I don't see them if they were even there. They may have long since been misplaced (before I purchased the boat and motor).
Will it have any short or long term effects if they are not there.
