1985 mercury 50 horse over heating problem

hello thanks for the previos help. the engine has 145 psi in all cylinders, but will not pump any water. the previous owner said it was just working. i put it in a barrel and run it and nothing. i blew air through the tell tail and bubblels came out in the barrel. i removed the brass plug between #2 and #3 cylinders and it looked like compression was puffing out. i took off the head water cover and did not see any cracks, and i spayed soap water in there and did not see any bubbles. i next took off the exhaust cover. all i found was a small area near one of the small passages going to the #2 cylinder corroded away, hard to really say for sure this was the problem. i have ordered the gaskets and a water pump kit. does any one have any ideas why there would be compression in the water jacket. i think the compression is keeping the pump from pumping water. thanks for any help dennis

but will not pump any water. [/QUOTE Worn impeller, water tube not seated properly. Missing slinger seal on the top of the pump could allow exhaust into the water pump.
