1985 Mercury 20 HP 200

Gentlemen, I am new to the forun and have found it to be wealth of help and information, and I need your help and guidence.
I have a 1985 Mercury 20 HP 200. The Motor was designed to be a tiller or converted to a control box. I ordered the parts and cables and everything installed according to the manual. The nightmare is it shifts backward. Would anyone have an Idea what is wrong and how do I resolve it.
I would appreciate any incite or help you could provide

Model number is required on this one------------------Too many motors are " mis identified / mis represented on years.

It sure does! Found that out the hard way myself. They--and Merc 110s--were set up that way.

You have two choises: Either find a remote control with the assbackwards cam (for these motors) or do what I did; modify the engine to make if shift correctly. This is easier than is sounds. I made up a simple bracket that is attached to the front handle. The bracket had a 1/4 " stud that engaged the "barrel"--that black plastic adjustment piece on the cable.

Thank you for the reply, nice to know im not as stupid as I thought I was. When you tell people this they look at you like you need medical attention. Would you know what they call the assbackwards control box? Also would you have a picture of the bracket you made you could share with me. Again thank you so much.

Thank you for your response. We have researched every angle to find out what year this motor is. No numbers anywhere the best we can determine is 85' or 86'. The parts we ordered that fit was for an 85' 20hp 200 Blue. Using that year we bought a 3 blade prop 8 spline that worked and the parts to convert from a tiller to control box from Mercury Central. The scyamatic shown on their web site matched what we have . So far so good! Now we ran into this backwards shifting problem.

Picture of the motor will tell what you have !-------------Trim on an 85 motor was not blue !---------Check a website called ----------nymarine-------------has all the pictures ./ years of motors according to decals.
 
Jeff,An update I found an local mercury dealer who has lots of knowledge about the older mercury motors and he ordered me a control box made for the backwards shift 20hp and 110hp they still are available. little pricey $255.00

Yikes! All you need is the cam that went into...Ah, get the whole box. They're a nightmare to work on.
