1985 mariner remote conversion issue

Hello, I recently installed the 95722a7 conversion kit on my outboard. When I hooked it up to my old outboard controls I seem to have an issue. The gear selection works fine but the throttle cable doesn't seem to move in the correct direction to get wide open throttle, it moves in the direction that would have been slow speed on the tiller.Would this be due to a non compatible mercury control box? It's the older model with the high idle level. Thanks for any help.
