1985 mairner 75 hp 4 cylinder was not charging battery. I baught a new rectifier/regulator (not name brand). After installing it I am now charging @ 16v and climbing up to 17v @ idle. Im am testing the motor in a tank and using a fully charged group 24 marine cranking battery. Should I invest in a CDI combo or is there something elsewhere I should look at?

While 17 volts is a touch high, 16.5 volts would not be unheard of.

This is a rectifier system NOT a regulator so the voltage will generally be somewhere in the 13.5-16.5 range.

That makes using a marine rated battery (or similar) important - it's designed to "regulate" the power for you and can stand being charged at a higher voltage than a typical auto battery would.

I use Sierra rectifiers (cheaper than OEM) - never had an issue with them wrecking a battery. If you are worried, replace the rectifier - it's cheaper than a new battery if you got a bad rectifier..

I fried a good tach with a non-regulated system, so I've gone to a voltage regulator. Got mine on eBay. They are used for garden tractors and other power equipment and cost under 30- bucks.

Thanks for the replys all! I thought the rectifier I bought said it was a rectifier/regulator combo? Apparently not? At any rate I just ordered a inline regulator.
